Bingo Generations

Unified Italy started the lottery in 1530 and inspired by this a game another one called beano came into existence. The word beano was coined since the game was played with beans being used to mark off the numbers on the ticket. Beano was first played at a carnival near Atlanta, Georgia and the response that the game saw was tremendous. Needles to say, the monetary generation capabilities of the game attracted business minds towards it and the game soon got commercialized. It was when a player excitedly and accidentally shouted out “bingo” instead of beano, that the term bingo came into being. It was Edwin S. Lowe who tapped the potential of the game commercially and propagated it in the American continent.

Since bingo was not frowned upon as a gambling activity, churches decided to adopt it in order raise funds to host charities and other such events. But the problem with the game became evident when a priest realized that in one game several winners came up. The need to plan out such a combination of tickets that prevented this from happening was imperative. A mathematician from Columbia University named Carl Leffler was hired by Edwin S. Lowe to produce combinations that would prevent too many winners in a game. The mathematician came up with 6000 variations and despite loosing his mind provided bingo with the necessary boost to go on.

From then on there was no stopping the game. Several variations like 75 ball bingo and 80 ball bingo came into being, over and above the traditional 90 ball bingo. Pattern playing and line elimination both flourished and players enjoyed both with equal zeal. Bingo halls and clubs cropped up that added an interactive angle to the joy of playing bingo. Grand casinos and clubs adopted the game to attract more cliental. In the internet prevalent times of today, online bingo has formed a large part of the revenue generated by the game. Since most of the players have access to the net they enjoy the thrill of playing bingo in the virtual world while relaxing in the comfort of their home.

Bingo has today carved a place of prominence for itself and is by far one of the most popular games being played today. In the world of video games and television it is amazing how the popularity of bingo continues to grow each day. From its birth in 1530 to date Bingo has seen several generations and appealed to each one of them.
